Why did Jesus come?

A quick hello to poetreehugger and anon from Australia (and don't worry, Catriona, I didn't think you were accusing me of anything!)
A very brief post, inspired by Sunday's service.

So the question is:
Why did Jesus come?

That's it! I am really interested to know what people's answers are, so post away...

  1. Oooh the temptation to write something totally flippant or daft...

All I know is that the answer is not simply 'to die' because if it was why all the gospel stories? And it's not just 'to be an example' otherwise why Calvary and beyond? I reckon there're several PhD's in a decent answer to that question.

  2. To rescue us in the only way that was totally just, heartbreakingly empathetic, and supremely effective, but so painfully hard--you've got to love the Guy.

  3. Hi,

...Out of a sense of responsibility, love and identification with a world that God conceived as good (despite its capacity to hurt and self-harm ), and chooses to see through the prism of forgiveness and redemption .

A passionate, loving, angry, wounded, sorrowful/joyful, self-abandoning, self-emptying, sacrificial response to a world God conceived in love. Like the moment a rescuer dives into the sea without self-regard or hesitation. A response that all our petty judgmentalism, rule-making and dill-tithing can't hope to capture or represent, but God graciously includes us in the deal anyway (so if there's hope for us...)

I can't really improve on your words from a couple of posts ago:

"Tell me about a God who is passionate about the world he created, to the extent that he keeps it going even while it is in rebellion against him, and actually becomes a part of that world; a God who loves, makes himself vulnerable, humbles himself, and gives all of himself to his creation and I might start wanting to know Him again."

    Count me in.

    Blessings and peace,

    Andy Jones
